The Scare

Have you ever had a health scare or know someone who has? A buddy of mine had a scare with his kid. For about 24 hours he thought his son had leukemia. Can you imagine? Hope you haven’t had to.

How about that near miss auto accident. Ever have one of those? You literally stop breathing and everything slows down, you just wait for the “hit”, but somehow you pull it off. Then you analyze the thing you did wrong and if you are smart you learn from it. But you are still shaken, at least for a while. Then you forget all about it, till next time.

Question is, why do we need The Scare in the first place? Why do we as humans always push things too hard? Of course some things are out of our control. But most are not.

Not sure of the answer since I’m the guy who used to ride his BMX off his parents home into the pool and did extreme sports before they invented the term. I sky dove, drove too fast, raced motorcycles, skated empty pools, “road biked” long distances in the dark, jumped things with my skis and even jumped a car across an intersection all before I was 19. I was scaring myself all the time.

I guess we’ll never know. But I’ll tell ya this, next time you have The Scare, do me a favor and try to love the the people in your life a little more, because you are one of the lucky ones that just got scared and “got away with it”. Some aren’t so lucky! I know because I still get scared thinking about what I used to do and know I’m one of those guys that got away with it.
